Bio

Kimberly Blackstock is a West Coast Canadian who grew up in an ever-changing environment moving from one neighbourhood to another. This constant change was a regular occurrence in her formative years and, although challenging, Blackstock found excitement in the evolving process of seeing life outside of what she had become accustomed to. This continual change in surroundings and adaptation became her only constant in life, which in turn has become the comfort she seeks as an artist today. The desire to see things differently, challenge perception, and connect to broader movements of changes in the art world.

Artist Statement

With a strong dedication to explore and push the boundaries of paint application, the intent of this work is to stimulate action with the viewer as a form of communication and to invoke a desire to involve senses beyond sight.

These West Coast-inspired works created with playful, welcoming colours draw the viewer in while the textures open the door for further exploration. It’s not difficult to visualize running your fingers along the dried paint and imagine what the sensations of these raised surfaces might feel like. This engages the viewer in their own creativity and understanding of the work while their act of imagination develops a closer connection.
