Bio

Karolina Koliopoulou is a medical doctor, practicing as an obstetrician-gynecologist in Athens, Greece. My relationship with painting started very early, since she grew up in a house where the walls were covered from top to bottom with paintings of contemporary Greek painters. The need to channel her creativity and to express what she cannot say with words led her to start painting, initially as a self-taught artist, in November 2018. Since then, she has participated in painting seminars and online courses and currently she is attending courses at a school of fine arts. The medium she uses is mainly acrylics, but also watercolors or oil pastels. It is contemporary realism that has influenced her the most. Koliopoulou’s inspiration originates from snapshots of human life, a life in harmony with the natural environment. Being a medical doctor, she desires her art to have a healing impact and make people feel better. She has taken part in several group exhibitions in Greece, and has received honorable mention awards in international juried competitions. Her first solo show is currently in the works.

Artist Statement

For the series of paintings I am currently working on, I am inspired by the endless hours I have spent immersed in the sea around the shores and islands of my country. When I am in the sea, I feel an instinctual connection with something my conscious mind is trying to perceive. I become aware of the continuity that brought all life into existence. I embrace a communion with the natural world, a sense of contentment, humbleness, and gratitude. In the water I am lighter, the physical and emotional burden is being lifted and I engage into a healing process. Painting people immersed in the water is an attempt to explore and define my connection with it. By sharing my art, time and space is provided to the viewers to explore their relationship with the sea, recall and relive experiences of their own or just enjoy the beauty that arises from the interaction of the human body with water and light.
