Artist Statement for Mother, Mother

I am an artist/writer living in Asheville, NC. These photographs are from a 15-year series spanning the life of my mother, as she travelled from a vibrant artist to a woman with no memory of her life. I had a difficult relationship with my mother. I was surprised when she let me photograph her on trips home for Christmas. I found that by making her my subject, it gave me the ability to see her vulnerability and her fierce love of life, art, and gardening.
