The artwork of Sarah Blood combines unlikely materials that would not traditionally be seen together in one sculpture in order to produce beautifully balanced works. Blood brings together materials such as glass with concrete, light with fabric, and neon with cake. Her sculptures are perfectly designed to showcase the magnificent, luminous nature of neon, contrasted against strikingly diverse elements like wood and upholstery. By pairing a diverse range of materials with neon glass, she emphasizes the fluidity of the light as it flows around the other materials and changes its colouration. The hardness and sturdiness of such materials as concrete threaten to overtake the fragile glass in works like Luna Fossil VIII. However, the radiating nature of the neon coloured light pour over the concrete like water, forcing it to yield to whatever hue it emanates. Blood also uses the repeating shape of the circle in her neon glass, which adds an additional organic element that juxtaposes against the rigidness of the inflexible concrete.

Sarah Blood has been perfecting her skill in glass throughout her career, leading her to earn an MA in Glass from the University of Sunderland. Inspired by science, natural phenomena, and geometrical abstraction, the artist’s incredibly unique style of sculpture and installation has been exhibited in cities across the United States, Europe, and the UK. Her work will be featured in the upcoming exhibition She Bend: Women in Neon at the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles.
